The V2 Ultrathin Royal Oak case in black PVD — the darkest, most stealth-oriented finish in the 37mm V2 range. The deep matte black coating over 316L stainless steel absorbs light across the angular octagonal bezel and integrated lugs, creating a monolithic profile that lets gold, rose gold, or silver dial accents stand out sharply by contrast. At just 9.95 mm thick with a solid caseback, 37 mm diameter, and 48 mm lug-to-lug, the proportions remain sleek and wearable. Sapphire crystal with blue or clear AR coating, screw-down signed crown, 100 m water resistance. Compatible with NH35, NH36, NH38, NH70, NH71, and NH72 movements. Solid or exhibition caseback.

Compatibility

Movements: NH35, NH36, NH38, NH70, NH71, NH72. All Seiko NH-family movements with the standard 3 o’clock crown position fit directly. Not compatible with 7S26 or 7S36.

Dials: 28.5 mm direct fit. Gold or rose gold dials and hands against the black case produce striking two-tone builds. Silver dials create a more subtle contrast.

Bracelet: The Royal Oak 37mm bracelet fits the 20 mm lug width. A black PVD bracelet completes the full stealth look.

Why the V2 Ultrathin

The Black PVD is the most dramatic finish in the V2 range — it turns the 37 mm octagonal case into a dark canvas where every other component becomes the accent. Gold hands on a black case read completely differently than gold hands on silver. The V2 platform achieves this at 9.95 mm thick, making it one of the slimmest Royal Oak-style cases you can build with. The key trade-off with black PVD is scratch visibility: deep impacts can expose the silver steel beneath, which shows more on a dark surface than on lighter finishes. For builders who prioritize the stealth aesthetic and handle their watches with care, the Black PVD delivers the most impactful visual result in the lineup.

Build Guide

Difficulty: Moderate — standard Seiko mod build. Tools needed: caseback opener, hand press or hand setting tool, stem cutter, movement holder, and rodico.

Key notes: Black PVD is the most sensitive finish to tool marks and handling scratches. Always work on a soft, clean surface and use a movement cushion. Wear gloves if possible. The exhibition caseback adds 0.35 mm to total thickness. Cut the crown stem precisely before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What movements fit this case?

The Royal Oak 37mm V2 case accepts NH35, NH36, NH38, NH70, NH71, and NH72 movements. All standard Seiko NH-family movements share the same fitment. The 7S26 and 7S36 are not compatible due to a different stem.

Will the black PVD coating scratch?

PVD is durable for daily wear. Deep scratches can expose silver steel underneath, which is more visible on a black surface than on lighter finishes. For maximum scratch tolerance, the Silver case has no coating. For a darker option that hides marks better than black, consider the Gunmetal case.

What is the difference between solid and exhibition caseback?

The solid caseback provides the thinnest profile at 9.95 mm with a clean, sealed back in matching black PVD. The exhibition caseback has a sapphire window that displays the movement inside, adding 0.35 mm for a total of 10.3 mm. Both maintain 100 m water resistance.

What dial and hand colors work best with black PVD?

Black PVD is the highest-contrast base. Gold or rose gold dials and hands create the most dramatic two-tone effect. Silver provides a cooler, more subtle contrast. A black dial with black PVD case produces a full stealth build where only the lume is visible in low light.

What Inspires This Case

The Black PVD Royal Oak 37mm Seiko Modding Case was developed for modders who prefer a more tactical take on the Seikoak design. We wanted to keep the same angular geometry of the Seiko Royal Oak, but translate it into something that feels modern, quiet, and mechanical — more stealth than shine. The matte PVD finish was chosen after several trials with darker coatings; this version had the cleanest tone and the most consistent grain when brushed.

Every facet of the case was adjusted slightly to handle the darker finish — polished edges tend to disappear under black coatings, so we modified the transitions to preserve the geometry without losing depth. The result is a Seiko Modding case that holds its shape in low light, giving subtle highlights instead of reflections. It’s meant for builders who want contrast: skeletonized NH72s against black bridges, or light dials framed by an all-black case.

Why 37mm Is Perfectly Proportioned

The 37mm Seikoak Mod platform keeps the visual weight under control. At this size, 28.5mm Seiko dials sit naturally inside the rehaut, and the integrated lugs maintain balance across the wrist. Going larger makes the all-black finish feel too heavy, while smaller cases start to lose the crisp geometry that defines the Seikoak profile.

In testing, this dimension delivered the most stable visual proportions — enough surface area to show the finishing, but compact enough to stay true to the original Royal Oak influence. Combined with Seiko mod parts like the NH35 or NH72, it becomes a solid foundation for stealth-focused builds: minimal, durable, and precise. It’s the most understated version of the Seiko Royal Oak mod, but also one of the most technically honest.
