The V2 Ultrathin Royal Oak case in gunmetal gray — a darker, matte-finish alternative to polished silver that avoids the scratch visibility of full black PVD. The gunmetal coating over 316L stainless steel gives the angular octagonal bezel and integrated lugs an industrial, tool-watch presence while maintaining the refined V2 profile at just 9.95 mm thick. At 37 mm diameter and 48 mm lug-to-lug, this case reads as understated and modern. Sapphire crystal with blue or clear AR coating, screw-down signed crown, 100 m water resistance. Compatible with NH35, NH36, NH38, NH70, NH71, and NH72 movements. Solid or exhibition caseback.

Why the V2 Ultrathin

The V2 Ultrathin in gunmetal occupies the middle ground between the bright silver and full black PVD finishes. At 9.95 mm thick, the V2 platform is one of the thinnest Royal Oak-style cases in Seiko modding, and the gunmetal coating adds a practical benefit: it hides light scratches better than both polished silver and black PVD. The matte gray tone sits close to the underlying steel color, so minor surface marks blend in rather than showing as bright lines (silver) or exposed steel spots (black PVD). For builders who want a darker case without worrying about scratch visibility, gunmetal is the most forgiving dark finish option.

Build Guide

Difficulty: Moderate — standard Seiko mod build. Tools needed: caseback opener, hand press or hand setting tool, stem cutter, movement holder, and rodico.

Key notes: The gunmetal surface is more forgiving than black PVD during assembly, but still benefits from a soft work surface to prevent marking. Exhibition caseback adds 0.35 mm to total thickness. Measure and cut the crown stem carefully before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What movements fit this case?

The Royal Oak 37mm V2 case accepts NH35, NH36, NH38, NH70, NH71, and NH72 movements. All standard Seiko NH-family movements share the same case fitment and crown position. The 7S26 and 7S36 are not compatible.

How does gunmetal compare to black PVD?

Gunmetal is a medium gray with a matte, industrial tone. Black PVD is darker and more opaque. The key practical difference is scratch visibility: gunmetal hides marks better because the underlying steel is closer in color to the coating. For a fully dark look, choose the Black PVD case. For the lightest option, choose Silver.

What dial size fits this case?

28.5 mm dials fit directly. This is the standard dial size for Royal Oak 37mm, Nautilus, and other 37 mm Seiko mod platforms. Browse our Royal Oak parts collection for compatible dials, hands, and bracelets.

Is 37 mm too small for a men’s watch?

37 mm is a classic men’s watch size — the same diameter as vintage Rolex and AP Royal Oak models. The 48 mm lug-to-lug measurement ensures strong wrist presence, and the angular bezel design makes the watch appear larger than a round 37 mm case would.

What Inspires This Case

The Gunmetal Royal Oak 37mm Seiko Modding Case started as an experiment in surface treatment. The goal was to take the clean, architectural lines of the Seikoak design and give them a darker, more utilitarian feel — something closer to industrial titanium than luxury steel. The brushed coating has a muted sheen, which lets the facets catch light without appearing polished or loud.

This color choice came from wanting a version that feels functional first — the kind of finish that looks even better once it’s been worn a while. It’s built for Seiko modders who lean toward stealthy builds: smoked sapphire, skeleton NH72 movements, and blacked-out chapter rings. Despite the darker tone, it keeps the same crisp geometry and integrated-lug proportions that define the Seiko Royal Oak shape.

Why 37mm Is Perfectly Proportioned

The 37mm case size wasn’t chosen by accident. It’s the point where 28.5mm Seiko dials line up exactly with the rehaut, keeping the dial centered without creating excess gap. During testing, we found that a fraction larger made the case feel loose around the dial, while smaller designs cut too close and disrupted the clean visual flow.

In use, this Seikoak Mod case wears compact, balanced, and technical — ideal for builders who want their watch to feel cohesive rather than oversized. It supports all standard Seiko mod parts (NH35, NH36, NH72), maintains the correct hand clearance, and keeps the dial spacing precise. It’s a dark, balanced foundation for any Seiko Royal Oak mod that values both restraint and detail.
